Mizuma Art Gallery celebrated its tenth birthday on March 19, 2005 with an opening of small works by all of the gallery artists including Makoto Aida, Muneteru Ujino (of the 'Rotators' fame which I have posted about), Hiroko Okada (shown in 'Body Con'), Jun Nguyen Hatsushiba and Hiroyuki Matsukage (pictured above centre beside his photograph of flowers). A birthday cake was placed in the middle of the gallery and the candles blown out by the artists and staff. Gallerist Mr. Mitsuma (seen above right in glasses) was in buoyant mood. I have been a frequent visitor to the gallery since 1998, when the gallery was in its previous location in Omote-sando. In 2001 I curated 'Tables Manners' at the old space, showing works by Guy Mayman, Les Joynes and Peter McDonald. Mizuma Art Gallery has always been one of my favourite galleries in Tokyo, with a sharp and uncompromising rosta of artists. Always slightly different to the more recent 'international' contemporary spaces in Tokyo which tend to behave themselves, Mizuma shows are often leud, offensive, scandalous or downright silly. Sara, Fujiki chan, Aoyama san, Mitsuma san - thank you.
